Bolivar, also called Ciudad Bolívar, is a municipality of Colombia, located in the sub region west of the department of Antioquia.
Although the precise date of the founding of Ciudad Bolívar is not determined clearly from the historical records, it is estimated that the foundation of this city took place between 1839 and 1853.
The main economic activities of Ciudad Bolivar have been agriculture, mining and trade. Its economy is based on the cultivation of coffee. The district is one of the main producers of the best coffee in the world. In fact, Ciudad Bolivar produces the so-called Café Gourmet, representing between 70 and up to 80% of the economic base of the district.
For the last 35 years the principle economic endeavor of the Guerra family has been coffee farming. Don Alfonso's son, Juan Carlos Guerra is already actively involved in the farm and will be the third generation in his family to continue the business. The family is now investing in differentiating their lots from others in order to tap into the specialty industry. The farm are diligent to keep up with the latest coffee practices: renovating the coffee trees annually, planting resistant and durable coffee varietals and finding new ways to improve the cup quality of the farm. Every year 20% of the trees are cut for renewal and twice a year, new trees are planted to replace the aging trees. Roughly 120,000 were planted in 2013.
